GMB Features Suspended

GMB Features Suspended Because Of Corona Virus

On Friday Google suspended some Google My Business features and put limits on others, including prioritising new listings based on industry.  That means we need to prioritise where we put our energies in optimising listings.

Google My Business LimitationsGoogle posted this on 20 March:

"During the unprecedented COVID-19 situation, we are taking steps to protect the health of our team members and reduce the need for people to come into our offices. As a result, there may be some temporary limitations and delays in support as we prioritize critical services."

Key changes are:

  • No New Reviews published
  • No review comments published
  • Q&As Removed from listings
  • Health related listings prioritised for verification, new listings and claiming listings
  • Information updates and posts taking longer to be approved
  • User generated content not published (to be confirmed)

New Reviews

For the present time no new reviews will be published to Google My Business profiles. Users will still be able to post and see their own reviews at this time, but they will not be publicly visible.

No information has been made available as to whether these reviews will be made visible once Google lifts the restrictions.

Review Replies

Review replies have also been disabled. This means that businesses will be unable to respond to existing reviews on their profile.

Google's announcement said the new Q&As would be blocked but it appears that existing Q&As have been removed from listings as well. Whether this was unintentional is not known so we wait to see if past Q&As return.

Adding, claiming and verifying GMB listings

No functionality is being removed, however Google’s listing review process is being prioritized for health-related businesses. Businesses that aren’t health-related can expect delays when adding and claiming listings and receiving listing verifications.

Google has not yet stated the length of the delay and they probably don't know yet.

Editing business information

Businesses that aren’t considered health-related can also expect delays to any content edits, including:

  • Open and closed times
  • Special hours
  • Temporary closures
  • Business descriptions
  • Business attributes
